Tapestry – 10/25/08

By Carl Haynes, October 27, 2008 2:59 pm

“A Surprise! (Fri & Sat only)” said the dessert menu. That sealed the deal, we were going to Tapestry this weekend. Susan was less sure, “What if its something we don’t like?” she said. I said something about how that was the whole point of Dessert Friday but reassured her that I would order the surprise and she could order something else off the menu.

Tapestry is located in what looks like a house just off the main Los Gatos strip. It is a cozy looking restaurant with a good size patio. We arrived about 9:15 or so on a Saturday (Dessert Friday happened on Saturday this week because of some dental work I had on Friday afternoon) and there were only 3 or 4 tables occupied inside. It was a nice night so the patio had quite a few people. We opted to be inside as Maya and Susan get cold pretty easily, it was probably warm enough for us to sit outside though.

Service was friendly and I was able to secure a high chair for Maya who started munching on some of the bread sticks that were on the table. I ordered ” A Surprise” ($9.00) with out even asking what it was while Susan ordered “Tapestry’s Chocolate Cake w/ Caramel Mascarpone Cream” (also $9.00). We each ordered tea ($2.50 each) which was a selection of Stash tea with a couple Peets tea bags thrown in.

The chocolate cake was warm and soft, with a nice bitter chocolate taste, the caramel complemented it nicely. The cake was not too sweet and probably would have gone better with coffee than tea.

The surprise was pumpkin flan left in the dish with the caramel at the bottom rather than flipped over. Again the flan wasn’t overly sweet and the pumpkin wasn’t over-powering. It was one of the best dishes we have had so far on Dessert Friday. It made us want to come back every weekend to see what the surprise is.

Dio Deka – 10/10/08

By Carl Haynes, October 10, 2008 6:36 pm

On Friday we visited Dio Deka, a greek restaurant in Los Gatos.

I had the baklava which was tasty and crisp. It had a good amount of pistachios and just a touch too little syrup for my taste. I like my baklava really sweet and sticky. It came with a small amount of banana gelato which was quite good (Maya enjoyed it) and a slice of banana with some carmelized sugar on top, always a favorite.

Susan ordered the Mill-fay, which we had never had before, but sounded interesting. Upon seeing it (it is huge) our eyes must have popped out of our head as the waiter assured us that we could take the leftovers home. They must get that reaction a lot.

The mill-fay is a tower of Puff Pastry layered with cream. The cream has just a hint of rum. the mill-fay was good, but I actually though it was better the next day after sitting in our fridge overnight. I think the cold stiffened up the cream some and gave it a little better texture.

Service was wonderful, we arrived about 9:30 and were immediately seated. They brought a high chair quickly and gave Maya lots of smiles.

Looking back over the menu, I think I should have tried something other than the baklava, probably the yiaourti which sounds a little more interesting. Its hard for me to resist baklava though.
